Note: Uninstalling this extension will delete all your saved history. To create a backup, use the "Export History" feature on the Options page. Also, this extension stores your history separately from Chrome's history. This means clearing Chrome's history will not delete your history within this extension, and this extension will not retain the color of links you've already visited.
When it comes to managing and analyzing your web browsing history, History Trends Unlimited provides a unique and effective solution. This Chrome extension offers several features, such as interactive charts and keyword search, that elevate user's control over their browsing data. Moreover, it addresses the Chrome-imposed limitation of approximately 3 months for history storage by syncing the data to a local database. This review will delve into the security and privacy aspects of History Trends Unlimited, to help users better understand the extension's impact on their online safety.
Extension's Security Analysis
While the extension's description on the Chrome Web Store does not directly discuss a security analysis, it does mention important security-related features. One of these is the local storage of browsing history. This means your history is saved on your device and not shared or sent over a network, which implies a lower risk of data interception or hacking. Also, the extension requires a minimum of Chrome v109. Higher versions of Chrome typically come with improved security measures, so this requirement can also be seen as a security advantage.
Potential Security Concerns or Vulnerabilities
Although History Trends Unlimited does not list any specific security vulnerabilities, users need to be aware that uninstalling the extension will delete all the saved history. To prevent data loss, the extension provides an "Export History" button on the Options page. It's also worth noting that this extension's history storage is separate from Chrome's history, so clearing Chrome's history does not affect the extension's data. Consequently, the color of the links you have previously visited won't be preserved when using the extension.
Requested Permissions and Their Impact on Security
The extension does not explicitly list the permissions it requests. However, for the extension to function as described, it likely requires permissions to access and change your browsing history. This is a common permission for extensions that manage browsing data, but it should not be granted lightly. Having access to your browsing history means the extension could theoretically see all the websites you visit. However, according to the extension's description, all the data is stored locally and not shared over a network, which minimizes potential security risks. As always, it's crucial to read and understand the permissions an extension requests before installation to ensure it aligns with your personal comfort level and security requirements.
In today's digital world, the importance of keeping track of web browsing history cannot be overstated. A fantastic tool that aids in this task is the Chrome extension, History Trends Unlimited. This extension is innovative and efficient, offering a robust solution for those who value their browsing history and need to access it beyond Chrome's approximate 3-month limit. It regularly syncs your history to a local database, allowing you to search and analyze your unlimited history seamlessly.
Features and User Experience
Running on Chrome v109 and above, History Trends Unlimited stands out with its unique features. It provides interactive charts and stats that are clickable for value filtering. Users can search their history by keyword or browse chronologically, giving them a vast range of options for retrieving their past web interactions. Additionally, users can access the raw data for personal analysis and even transfer their history to a new computer, a feature detailed in the Options page.
User reviews are overwhelmingly positive, praising the extension for its utility and efficiency. Users appreciate the ability to keep track of their browsing history beyond the standard 90 days offered by Chrome. Some users have expressed a desire for additional features, such as the ability to configure where backups are stored, removal of duplicate records, and options to ignore certain domains.
While most users provide glowing feedback, some have reported issues with the extension's performance. There have been complaints about the auto backup function not working correctly and data corruption issues. A few users even reported that the extension sometimes runs out of memory and crashes. However, it's worth noting that the developer has shown a proactive approach to resolving these issues, as evidenced by a quick response to a user's reported issue that was fixed on the same day.
Conclusion
Overall, History Trends Unlimited is a powerful and useful extension for anyone needing to keep track of their surfing history beyond what's traditionally provided. Despite some minor performance issues, the Chrome extension remains a top pick due to its unique features, user-friendly interface, and responsive developer.
However, users should be aware that uninstalling the extension will result in deletion of all saved history. To safeguard against any loss, the developer recommends using the "Export History" button on the Options page to create a backup. Similarly, it's important to note that clearing Chrome's history will not delete the history saved in this extension, and the extension will not preserve the color of links already visited.
As a top-rated SEO specialist and content writer, I am here to provide you an in-depth review and comparison of the Chrome extension - History Trends Unlimited - and how it stacks up against similar extensions like Recent History and Better History. This analysis should give you an insight into the unique features each extension offers and enable you to make an informed decision on which one best suits your needs.
History Trends Unlimited vs. Recent History
History Trends Unlimited and Recent History are both Chrome extensions designed to help you search and analyze your browsing history. However, they differ significantly in terms of features and capabilities.
History Trends Unlimited goes beyond just letting you search your history; it regularly syncs your history to a local database to bypass the 3-month limit imposed by Chrome. With this extension, you also get interactive charts and stats, the ability to search your history by keyword or chronologically, and access to raw data for your personal analysis. Notably, this extension allows you to transfer your history to a new computer, a feature not found in many similar extensions.
On the other hand, Recent History offers a more simplified approach. Its main focus is on providing a straightforward way to view and search recent browsing history. However, it lacks the comprehensive analytics and data visualization features available in History Trends Unlimited.
History Trends Unlimited vs. Better History
Better History is another popular extension used to manage browsing history on Chrome. While it presents a more organized way to view your browsing history, it does not provide the robust analytics capabilities of History Trends Unlimited.
Unlike History Trends Unlimited, Better History does not have the feature to carry out a deep analysis of your browsing trends, nor does it sync your history to a local database. While it does offer a better-organized interface for viewing history compared to Chrome's default history page, it misses out on features such as interactive charts, stats, and data export options that are present in History Trends Unlimited.
Final Thoughts
In conclusion, History Trends Unlimited offers a more comprehensive set of features for managing and analyzing your browsing history compared to both Recent History and Better History. Its unique selling points - the ability to sync history to a local database and offer in-depth analytics with interactive charts - set it apart from other similar extensions. Therefore, for users who require deep analysis of their browsing patterns, History Trends Unlimited would be the recommended choice.

Strengths and Weaknesses of History Trends Unlimited
One of the main strengths of History Trends Unlimited is its ability to regularly sync your browsing history to a local database. This clever workaround bypasses Chrome’s approximate 3-month time limit, ensuring that your history is saved locally, and is never shared or sent over the network. The provision of interactive charts and stats also makes it easier to understand and analyze your browsing patterns.
However, a notable weakness of this extension is its requirement of a minimum of Chrome v109. This could pose a barrier to users with older versions of Chrome. This extension also doesn't preserve the color of links already visited, which could be a shortcoming for some users.

Its strengths far outweigh its weaknesses, making it a worthy addition to your Chrome extensions. Tips and Recommendations for Users
Users are advised to regularly backup their browsing history to prevent data loss. Additionally, if you want to perform detailed analysis, leverage the raw data access feature. Finally, ensure that your Chrome browser is updated to at least version 109 to optimally utilize this extension.
10 Reviews For This Extension
One of the best and must have extensions for people valuing their browsing history. Dev is a godsend. I hope he can expand his donation channels soon, he deserves it. *Also.. I believe a "more up to date/modern" icon for the extension could help getting more users attracted at first sight, matching what is on the thumbnail (the bar chart, right now they feel somewhat unconnected). (I also noticed dev has 2 variations of the extension: one for the 3 month Chrome in-built history, and this with external embeded database! Nice! I hope he can promote and note this 2 differences for users looking what fits best for them)
Great addition for people with better memory than that of a goldfish. As Chrome only remember history 90 days back, this add on is great if you want to come back to a site you visited earlier but didn't keep in bookmarks. I wish it had the option to configure where to store the backups, or even configure a backup file name template.
One of the most useful extensions for sure. What would be nice though - some more tools to work with the data, e.g. removal of all duplicate records to lower the size of the DB, together with a setting to not save duplicates at all. Or a way to ignore certain domains. Not sure if there's a better place to post these suggestions.
i'm happily using this extension since years, ran into an issue yesterday so i sent a message to the dev and he actually pushed an update on the same day to fix the problem! never seen such a fast support/answer, keep up the good work!
Feature request: Add an option to choose the folder backups are written to. Alternatively, an option to append to the backup TSV rather than make new files. Background: I keep my ~/Downloads clean without scripts. The incremental backups impede that. Edit: Oh, probably a limitation in API given the FAQ: "I will consider adding support for the Native File System API once it becomes stable. That should allow you to choose a custom directory"
After the change in database platform it has been SO slow to start up the extension. Even though it still comes in handy!
It is an excellent extension, but the auto backup function doesn't work at all. Given that the data corruption happens monthly now, it is a serious problem.
With the corruption thing going on does that mean that all the history I haven't backuped is gone? :(
I've been HTU for years and back in September I was able to import my WebSQL history to the new format (On Sept 9th) and it's been working fine for a while... But I just found out today that for some reason, all of my history past November 7th disappeared and I don't know why. I still have history from September and I still have my old WebSQL history file so I can still import and get a majority of my history back but... For some reason HTU doesn't want to import my Chrome/Opera history from September 10th to November 7th... I have a question, I apparently made a backup of the history on the 7th of November (Never used the backup feature but used it on that day just to test it and deleted the backup file afterwards) and I don't know when but that's the last point in history that HTU saved, refusing to save past it. Should I uninstall and re-install HTU to import all of my history or is there another way to force HTU to save all my history of the browser? I'm lucky I caught on to this as the 3 months since september are slowly disappearing in my browser's history. It's a weird bug alright! If I figure this out, I'm going to re-enable backup seeing how this new database system is finicky alright.
Unable to backup from the UI. The extension keeps running out of memory and crashing. Update: After reinstalling and restoring my database manually from the WebSQL restore guide, now when backing up instead of crashing it just gets stuck on the loading animation. I even let it run for a whole day.
